Luca Signorelli

Città di Castello (PG) - From April 21st to August 21st the major exhibition devoted to the work of Luca Signorelli will be spread over three major venues - the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria, the Duomo of Orvieto where Signorelli painted the world famous fresco cycle, and the Pinacoteca Comunale of Città di Castello. Curated by Fabio De Chirico, Vittoria Garibaldi, Tom Henry and Francesco Federico Mancini, the show - whose full title is "Luca Signorelli, de ingegno et spirto pelegrino”, boasts a dazzling 100 works on loan from various prestigious collections and enjoys the patronage of the Italian culture ministry, the Regione Umbria, the Provinces of Perugia and Terni, the Comuni of Perugia, Città di Castello and Orvieto, the Dioceses of Perugia, Città di Castello and Orvieto, the Opera del Duomo di Orvieto, the Fondazioni of the Casse di Risparmio di Perugia, Città di Castello and Orvieto, the Camere di Commercio of Perugia and Terni and the Università degli Studi di Perugia.

Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera, built in the early 16th century by the Vitelli family who patronised Signorelli when he was still a young man, will also be housing a section of the exhibition. Signorelli in fact painted portraits of Niccolò Vitelli and his two sons Camillo and Vitellozzo. The same family also commissioned the altarpiece depicting the Martyrdom of St Sebastian, which will be on display alongside the only other work by Signorelli to have remained in Città di Catello - the Gonfalone della SS Trinità.
