Life in Ferentillo During WW1

Ferentillo (TR) - Ferentillo (Tr). Technically a historical re-enactment, “Le Rocche Raccontano” is made up of fifteen living tableaux all set in the magnificent old town centre of Ferentillo. Each episode relives a particular moment in the lengthy history of this ancient Umbrian town, from the pre-Roman Naharki tribes to the arrival of the Longobards and the building of the San Pietro in Valle abbey, Pope Boniface VIII, the Lateran Chapter, the Cybo family, the Inquisition, the miracle of St Sebastian, highwaymen and outlaws and, finally, the Great War of 1914-1918. The tableaux will be enacted over the two weekends that span August 19th to 29th, accompanied by a host of other collateral events and attractions such as falconry, archery contests, a Medieval banquet, gladiator matches and so on.

From 7pm onwards the Taverna dell’ Abbadia will be serving typical local culinary specialities every day, and three exhibitions will be running throughout the period:
•    A photography exhibition on the hamlets and fortresses in the Ferentillo area
•    A contemporary painting exhibition
•    A show documenting the history of the Terni-Ferentillo railway
Visitors might also like to cast their eye over the many objects and works of art on sale at the local crafts market.
This year’s edition of the event boasts an added degree of prestige through the special collaboration with Neurothon, a non-profit organisation that raises funds for research into conditions affecting the nervous system and the brain such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, spinal injuries, strokes or tumors of the central nervous system. All money raised during the event will go to the research centre opposite the Santa Maria hospital of Terni, headed by Prof. Angelo Luigi Vescovi.

THE TOWN OF FERENTILLO

Ferentillo is within the Province of Terni, along the course of the River Nera between the Marmore Falls and Norcia, at the exact point where the Valnerina opens up from being a narrow gorge into a broader valley. The last two peaks to mark this geological ‘transition’ are “il Monte” to the West and Monte Sant’Angelo – known as the “Scoglio di Mezzogiorno” – to the East. The 12th century castles of Mattarella and Precetto stand on the two summits and were intended to control this strategic passage towards the Abbey of San Pietro in Valle.
This whole area is rich in art, from the 15th and 16th century frescoes of the Church of Santa Maria by Jacopo Siculo to the extraordinary Abbey of San Pietro in Valle itself, as well as a number of isolated hermitages tucked away in the thick forests that abound here. Besides its art sights, Ferentillo also offers a broad range of open air sports facilities such as free climbing, rafting and canoeing down the River Nera, long walks along ancient mule tracks and down the Ferentillo section of the old Via Francigena.
One of the main attractions for visitors nowadays remains the local cuisine, with its simple ingredients such as olive oil, truffles, vegetables and wild herbs that have been elaborated into tasty dishes through centuries of home cooking tradition and experience.
