Città della Pieve (Pg). Città della Pieve is gearing itself full throttle for this year’s edition of its Palio dei Terzieri, which will run from August 11th to 22nd. The origins of this Medieval pageant date back to the Middle Ages, when in the 13th century Castel della Pieve – as it was known in those times – was divided up into three ‘districts’, or terzieri, each one reflecting the three social classes that made up the community: the gentry, the bourgeoisie and the working class. Originally a kind of bull run with lances, today’s Palio is a somewhat tamer event, with teams from each of the three districts competing in an archery contest at the Campo di Santa Lucia. The competition proper will be preceded on the 23rd by a procession in period costume made up of some 700 participants all representing the secular, religious and military authorities, and accompanied by ladies, knights and musicians. The Terziere team to win the archery contest gets to keep the banner until next year’s competition.
