Gubbio (Pg). The Festa dei Ceri – Gubbio’s major annual event – will take place this year on May 15th, as always on the eve of the feast of the city’s patron saint, St Ubaldo.
Weighing roughly four tonnes each, the vast Ceri are carved out of wood and surmounted, respectively, by the statues of St Ubaldo, St George and St Anthony. The race itself is the climax of the entire event, with the Ceri borne on the shoulders of each contending district’s swarthiest men at a run through the streets of the old town centre up to the Basilica of St Ubaldo on Mount Ingino. The team that makes it first to the doors of the Basilica wins the coveted banner for a year.
