Scheggino (PG) - Scheggino, loc. Monte S.Vito (Pg). Monte San Vito will be holding this year's edition of the mutton festival on July 23rd-25th, the 30th-31st and on August 1st, 6th, 7th, and 8th. Of ancient origin, this festival derives from the local transhumance tradition by which shepherds brought their flocks from the valleys into the mountains for the summer months. As payment for any trespassing over private lands during the journey, it became customary for them to offer two of their sheep as compensation. One sheep would be consumed by the villagers and the other would be offered during the mutton festival by those organising the procession to honour the feast day of Our Lady of Good Counsel.
