Amelia (Tr). From July 24th to August 8th the old town centre of Amelia will be alive with this year’s edition of the popular Palio dei Colombi, a horse pageant whose ceremonial is based on sections of the 1346 city statutes that forbade pigeon hunting. A number of scenes in period costume will be enacted, from the Investiture of the Knights and Crossbowmen to the Election of the Elders, and the Arrival of the Podestà.
From 10pm onwards every night the Taverna delle Contrade will be serving Medieval dishes, with the Palio dei Colombi itself scheduled for 9pm in the Campo dei Giochi after the vast procession in period costume through the city streets at 6pm. Each of Amelia’s five contrade, or districts, compete in the Palio, with knights riding along with a crossbowman who will attempt to shoot open a basket containing doves.
