History and tradition of the festival
In Santa Maria degli Angeli, the postilions postal transit route between Florence and Rome, there was a station for changing horses. After 1860 there broke out a severe epidemic, which hit especially horses in these stables. The bosses worried, they turned confident in Sant'Antonio Abate, the patron of the beasts, praying the religious of the Portiuncula to make a Triduum in honor of the saint, which in those days the feast day.
Awarded with the end of the grace of the disease and averted the danger of death of the horses, in thanksgiving to the Saint was celebrated with great solemnity that year his party, was made the procession through the streets of the town and a lunch was distributed to the poor, who took the name of "Plate of St. Anthony."
