To the Ancient Terrargo Iron Ore Quarries

Monteleone di Spoleto (PG) - This unusual expedition combines stunning views with a look at the impressive iron quarries of Terrargo. Departure is from Monteleone, from which a series of ancient footpaths lead to Casale La Villa and then onto Butino. From here a dirt road continues to Balocco, near which there are the ruins of the fortress of Vetranola. This is the place where the so-called Via del ferro begins - the route down which the iron ore was once transported after it had been extracted from the quarries. The route leads to the Terrargo spring and nearby to the iron ore quarries. Only the openings of the caves are accessible to the public but they are nonetheless well worth the walk. Up a little further you reach the Capo la Valle pass and then into magnificent beech forests towards Mount Motola, where you can have a picnic lungh. The summit commands extraordinary views over the surrounding countryside.
