Norcia (PG) - Castelluccio di Norcia (Pg). On September 19th Castelluccio di Norcia celebrates the Feast of the Madonna Addolorata in quite a unique manner. By local tradition, all the town's unmarried girls waited eagerly for this festivity in that it represented a chance to be selected as one of the two girls who would be fitted with a full dowry. A rich and heirless old gentleman had in fact left all his estate to be administered by the local priest but with the sole aim of providing two young girls each year (the lucky ones were always drawn at random among those present at Mass) with a complete dowry including money for their wedding dress. Although the fund has long dwindled away, the tradition has remained alive, notwithstanding even the dwindling population of Castelluccio. Still today, many nubile girls originally from these parts - who maybe don't even live here - apply to be selected as the Santesi on the day devoted to the Madonna Addolorata.
